I recently met up
with DJ Fix, An Up & Coming DJ in the Houston Scene at the always Fab Chill
Spot The Davenport (2117 Richmond Ave) To talk Music, Mixing, & Money.
At Just 22 years old he’s
won 1st place at the Texas Lone Star DJ Battle, has shared the Booth
along side with DJs Such as Josh Dupont & James Reed, and has his own web
based Radio show on Stick AM. Passionate, Hard Working and Motivated this DJ keeps
true to his nature and is always willing to do whatever it takes to get the Job
done, literally.
We grabbed a few
minutes to learn more about DJ Fix….
What genre of music do
you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?
“EDM (Electronic Dance Music). My influences come from all sorts of areas of
the music spectrum. I’ve always loved music so it’s hard to really narrow it
down…”
"I’d have to say Pink
Floyd, not only for their music but the way they presented it live. Also Paul
Van Dyk and his work have really motivated me.”
How did you come up
with your name “DJ FIX”?
“Actually for the longest time I never had a DJ name and I was playing parties
and stuff and everyone kept asking me so I made one up, based on my day job,
which is an HVAC Tech. I fix shit for a living, So.. DJ Fix.”
What has been your
biggest challenge as a DJ?
“Honestly my biggest challenge so far is buying all the equipment... This shits
expensive!”
What's your ultimate
direction for you, as a DJ?
“Like I’ve said before, I love doing this and Mixing. Something about making
two tracks work each other brings a smile to my face. It would be nice to do
that and be able to make enough money to make a living out of it”
Do you have a record
label?
“No label, I’ve only begun to explore producing. NRG Productions has been a
good experience.”
What image do you
think your music conveys? And do YOU think you do a good job of
“Bringing it”?
“I like to convey all sorts of things with music. I use it as a tool to try and
create an atmosphere where people can dance and lose themselves."
“Some nights are better than others but I always look for
ways to give my crowd what they want before they even know there looking for
it. I haven’t had any bad experiences
really, as long as I have a crowd it always ends in a good night!”
How has your music
evolved since you first began playing music?
“My style of music has shifted here and there since I started Djing, but it’s
always been about Trance Music and House Music for me.”
How did you get your
start and what advice do you have for those who want to become DJ’s?
"This
retired DJ I meet who saw my heavy interest and love for music and sold me
everything I needed to get started for almost nothing.”
“I wanted to be a DJ a good 4 years before I finally had the
chance to step behind some real turntables. My advice is: If you want to do it,
DO IT! DJing isn’t for everyone and I’m pretty sure you will know very quickly
whether it’s for you or not. You have to really love music.”
What’s next for DJ
Fix and should we be on the lookout for something special?
“I
have been preparing a promo mix that will hopefully be finished and out by the
end of this year.”
Where can we listen
to your beats if we’re not available to jump in the car and drive down to the
local lounge?
“MySpace
is always a good spot (www.myspace.com/djfixhouston).
I also do a weekly live show on StickAM (http://www.stickam.com/djfixhouston)
Tuesdays from 9-10:30 p.m.. It’s free and it’s a great chance to hear me spin all
sorts of different music. I love it because there are no guidelines or
constraints you would kind of get at a club or bar, just what I’m feeling.”
